Polychrome architectural panel

17th/18th century polychrome panel.

img217This interesting piece of architectural panelling, possibly a hatchway with it’s iron pull rings, would appear to be continental in style and possibly Portuguese. While 17th century in it’s decoration it is possibly of a later date.

img218It’s ┬áheavy construction would point to a possible use in shipbuilding or large architectural use.

img219It came to me with some missing decorative carved elements and missing and loose mouldings. There was also considerable loose and damaged areas to the painted surface.

img220aThe aim of the restoration was to replace missing sections and stabilise loose areas but to do so with the lightest of touches. The polychrome surface was consolidated where loose and minimal infill of colour was done to blend new repairs. The essential aim was to leave the piece with as untouched a feel as possible to maintain the feel of it’s age.
